Loss

Where to even begin? I'm not sure where to start or how to even begin to find the words to express how I am feeling. So I'll just start. We found out we were expecting baby #3 in middle of July, just a few weeks before we packed up our whole life and family and moved to Edmonton. To say we were excited and nervous would be an understatement!! I was worried about starting a new job and qualifying for maternity leave, considering I would have only been working there for a few months. I had received a position and it was only until the end of December, so I felt better knowing that I would still be able to hold up my end of the deal.

We moved up to Edmonton, got settled and then the search for a family doctor commenced. I found a doctor that was accepting new patients and made an appointment. The only problem was  that with summer vacations he couldn't see me until the beginning of September. Which I felt would be fine. It was my 3rd time around and other than some nausea I was feeling pretty good.

My appointment with the Doctor went really well. We discussed my health and how my pregnancy was going. Because I had became pregnant so soon after getting my iud out the doctor felt it would be beneficial to send me for a dating ultrasound so we would have a better understanding of how many weeks I was. I left the appointment feeling really awesome and excited about getting to have a early ultrasound, as I had never had one before.

On September 10, Zac, Kylie and I walked Nick to his very first day of kindergarten. To say I was emotional doesn't begin to explain how I felt. I held it together, said goodbye and we left. We got home and I got in the van and left for my ultrasound appointment. Zac stayed home with Kylie as we didn't have a babysitter and didn't want to pay $35 for such a short time. I was early for my appointment and they called me back quite soon. I laid down in the dimly light room as the ultrasound tech moved the wand around my stomach. She started asking me all sorts of questions like was I nauseas, had I had any bleeding or cramping. She then told me that she couldn't get a good look at anything and needed me to empty my bladder so she could do a vaginal ultrasound. I went to the bathroom, returned to the room and l laid down on the stretch with a sinking feeling. The tech came back in, did the exam, looked at me and said "there is no baby." What?! How can that be?! I had two positive pregnancy tests...I haven't had any spotting or cramping....I'm nauseated....how could I have not know what was happening.

I walked out of that building and called Zac when I got to the van. I didn't know what to say or do. I came home and laid on the couch in a daze for the rest of the day.
Zac called our doctor and left a message with them to call us back as they weren't in the office. They called back the next day, Zac and I went in as soon as I was finished work for the day. The next day, we met with the doctor and he was very optimistic that maybe my date where just wrong. I went for some blood work that day and had a follow up appointment on the Monday.

On Monday, the doctor wasn't quite as optimistic and I got a referral to the Early Pregnancy Loss Clinic. The next day, the clinic contacted me and I was told I need to have two to three more HCG blood levels done before we could come up with a plan. That week, I went on Tuesday and again on Friday. On Thursday, things started to happen. I started spotting very lightly, but nothing to extreme. The clinic contacted me again onSaturday to tell me that my HCG levels where declining fast and I told the nurse that I had started bleeding but it wasn't very much. She told me it would get heavier but then should start to taper off. I was working a stretch off nights as all this was happening. On Sunday night at work I started to have a heavier flow and the cramping was getting more intense, but I was taking ibuprofen and Tylenol and it was helping. I also but a warm blanket on my stomach and that helped too.

I got home from work Monday and had a quick rest before Zac went to school. Kylie and I hang out and we had a low key day. At 330, we went and picked Nick up from school came home I set up a snack and show for them. That's when it all started to go down hill. I was in the bathroom and started to pass some very large clots and my bleeding was starting to pick up. I started to panic. I called Zac but he was still in class. So I called my sister. She came over right away and stayed with me until Zac got home about 45 mins later. At the point, I was losing blood quite at an alarming rate. Zac got home and we immediately left for the emergency room. Luckily the hospital is only about a 5 minute drive from our house.

We parked and ran into the emergency room. I started to feel really light headed and wasn't doing to well. Zac budged in line and told the lady at the desk I need help immediately. She told him to get me in a wheel chair and wait to be triaged. I remember sitting down in the wheel chair but then nothing after that. The next thing I remember is they were laying me down on a stretcher hooking me up to monitors and starting IVs. Once I was laying down, I was more with it and could answer questions and knew what was going on. About ten minutes after arriving in emergency the gynecologist was already down to check on me at about 5:15.  Things were bad. My blood pressure was tanking and I was losing a lot of blood. They booked me for surgery right away. I was taken up to the OR just after 6:00, where they preformed a D&C. I went to recovery then the floor them was discharged home at 10:30pm that night. The doctors and nursing staff were so incredible and kind to me the whole way.

I feel like I got hit by a truck and have had a rough couple of days. Luckily my mom and husband have been here to help me and I have had time to recover. It feels like weeks since we found out that we had lost the baby, but then in the next breath only seconds. My heart hurts right along with my body. I feel sad about all the things we had planned on happening in the next few months. I'm so grateful for my little family. My kids have been troopers this week. Kylie keeps asking if I'm all better and if I'm ok. She snuggles right up to me and gives me the best  loves ever. My emotions are still all over the map, and some days are better than others. We loved that little angle baby so much.
